Earrings, in a wide variety of designs, were worn by women throughout the Islamic world. These earrings were described as from West Africa when they were bequeathed to the Museum in 1904. They are more likely to be from Nubia, a region which stretches along the Nile from southern Egypt to the Sudan. Plain flat crescents, like this, with simple engraved geometric decoration, are typical of the traditional jewellery worn by Nubian women.

Pair of silver hoop earrings consisting of a flat crescent base with a thick wire extending in an arch from one tip almost as far as the other. The flat crescent is decorated on the front with two bands of triangles filled with ring punching, and on the back with an overall pattern of ring punching.
