The traditional jewellery of the Syrian region, which incorporated much of Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon as well as Syria itself in the 19th century, shows influences from a wide range of sources, reflecting Syriaâs strong trading traditions and central location. The jewellery worn in towns, which is often Ottoman or western in style, is frequently very different from that worn by the nomadic Bedouin, whose characteristic silver jewellery is much better known today. This delicate gold filigree earring decorated with turquoises and seed pearls is from the urban tradition. There is very little to distinguish it from filigree work from anywhere else around the Mediterranean, but there is no reason to think that it is not typical of what was worn in Syrian towns such as Beirut at the time.

Gold filigree earring, consisting of a flat disc hanging from a curved wire. The disc is set with a turquoise in a raised mount with a border of triangles of granules surrounded by a circle of pierced seed pearls. There is a similar turquoise on the top of the disc, above the link to the wire. The outer edge of the disc is also bordered with triangles of granules. There are five pearls with filigree caps hanging from the lower edge of the disc.
