Woven linen and silk. Egyptian, Manshiya, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. The linen in undyed; loosely woven; approx. 21x17 tpc; differing thread dia. from 0.25mm-1.0mm. One edge is selvedge with two pink, vertical stripes (approx. 3mm wide) at the edge. Three horizontal bands lie across the piece. The central band (approx. 15mm wide) is of a line of circles - white circles on blue background, with a repeating geometric design in each circle. Two of the circles enclose a red background and appear to have a different written character within. One either side of this band is a thin line (one side pink, one side red) and then a band of scrolled decoration. Each scroll (white on blue background with a small pink dot at the inner edge) is separated with slit-tapestry and a small section of plaited threads. One of these bands is bordered on the outer edge with a thin pink thin (1 thread wide). In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. Text from the Koran was embroidered across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
