A tapestry woven panel in linen and wool. Egypt, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD200-500. The linen is undyed with warps of 3-5 threads, s-spun. At places along the piece a 3-5 group of threads will be wrapped, s direction, with another linen thread to create part of the final pattern. The weft is of maroon wool with some yellow wool remaining. Half the wool is missing but this allows the construction of the piece to be examined more closely. The design is rectangular and consists of a central interlace pattern with yellow wool creating the centre of a flower icon. This is then surrounded by a thin (15mm wide) and thick (30mm wide) border of guilloche interlace. The decorative panel is within an undyed linen cloth. The whole piece has been attached in modern times to a dark blue plastic fabric and includes an old label, hand written in ink. It says: "Panel of woven tapestry, brown wool and flax. Part of a linen robe. Guilloche border. From ...(?) tomb of Panopolis, Akhmim, Upper Egypt, 1st to 5th century. (?)... by A Dudley (?) 1900."
