Notes One of the important topics raised in the sociology of religion is the social functions of religion. The purpose of this current research is to index and measure some of the most important functions (social cohesion, social control, social participation and identity due to religion). In this research, it has been tried to extract the dimensions, components, and items of each one according to the theories proposed about these four functions, and finally, they are evaluated among the statistical population of the research, that is, the students of Tehran University and Shahid. The sample population is 382 people and the sampling method is stratified. To measure validity, face validity and criterion validity were used, and Cronbach's alpha was used to measure the reliability of the questions, which is .86. Also, parametric tests such as factor analysis have been used to check the correctness of the research questions. The results of measuring these 4 functions show that 72.8% of the respondents believe that religion is the factor of their cohesion with other people. 56.2% consider religion as the factor that keeps them from doing wrong actions. 79.4% consider religion as the reason for their participation in society and 68% of people have a religious identity.
