| Notes | If there is a shortage of bread, as sometimes happens in a mess, the far-seeing Sergeant cook will be able to substitute something in lieu of bread. I find the men like well-made bread puddings for tea, either boiled or baked, and if all the dry scraps of bread have been saved there should be plenty for that purpose frequently, or–if flour is available plain scones or baking powder bread. |
