Notes The concept of pilgrimage is widely used in religious literature and expresses a kind of relationship between man and the world. In the religious literature of the world, pilgrimage has long history and has always existed throughout history. Pilgrimage was a homogeneous and balanced activity in the past, while today it has become a heterogeneous and unbalanced activity. In this article, we are trying to know and understand the heterogeneous elements in the act of pilgrimage, focusing on the diversity created in the context of pilgrims. In other words, can the changes in the traditional activity such as pilgrimage be understood in the society with the changes of modernity? In other words, by relating the act of pilgrimage to Imam Reza (a.s.) with modernity and finally the following elements such as secularization in contemporary Iran, we examine and categorize the types of pilgrims to the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (a.s.). Therefore, by classifying the types of pilgrims into traditional, modern and tourist pilgrims, we will discuss their characteristics. The methodological approach adopted in this article is qualitative and based on ethnographic perspectives. Research data is also obtained from various sources such as pilgrims' diaries, petitions and travelogues, interviews, observations, autoethnography and other quantitative and qualitative sources.
