Notes Since time immemorial the bulk o {the trade of Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf has been in the hands of Indian merchants, and it was in the interests of these traders that agencies of the Bombay Post Office were originally established at various of the Gulf ports, including Basra and Fao at the mouth of the Euphrates in the latter half of the last century, and subsequently in the capital, Baghdad, itself.
