Sample Text The enormous wealth of Anatolia, especially the West, in ruins and monuments from the Hellenistic and Roman times, which are often better preserved and more impressive than many others in the vast area of the ancient world, has attracted the attention of contemplative or learned travelers since the end of the Middle Ages and has not ceased to occupy researchers from all nations since the end of the 19th and 20th centuries to their development and, let us not forget, partly also to their preservation and thus their rescue for posterity. Pergamon and Miletus, Ephesus and Priene, Didyma and Sardis and many other sites have become established concepts in both art and architectural history, and few excavations have allowed us to penetrate as deeply into the understanding of ancient life as those of those cities on the western coast
