Byzantium was populated from prehistoric times. Legend attributes its founding to the Megarians. When they consulted the oracle of Delphi about the location of the city they wanted to found, the oracle recommended that they choose this location "opposite the city of the blind". With this enigmatic answer the Megarians set out, in the year 658 BC, under the leadership of Byzas. A long march brought them to the blue shores of the Bosphorus. Stopping at the site occupied today by the Palace of Topkapı', they contemplated the panorama which unfolded before their eyes and saw the city of Chalcedon, a Phoenician colony (today Kadıköy). Surprised that this site had been chosen without noticing the beauty of the one where they were at that moment, the Megarians described the founders of this city as blind, and understood. then the meaning of the oracle.
