Notes In the monograph I published about Ulugh Beg in 1918, I did not mention the coins of this ruler. It was impossible for him to mint coins with his own name throughout most of his long reign. Ulugh Beg ruled Samarkand and the whole Turkestan completely independently, made expeditions and built magnificent buildings; In the works of scholars and writers and in the inscriptions left by him, titles specific to individual rulers are used for Ulugh Beg, and not only his sultanate but also his caliphate are mentioned.
