Notes	Of the three attacks launched by the Islamic states, Arabs and Turks against the Byzantine Empire, the first and second weakened this empire, and the third destroyed it. The first attack in the first century of Islam took Syria and Iraq from Byzantium, but stopped in the Taurus Mountains. The second wave of attack by the Seljuk Turks spread to most of Anatolia, but was broken off right in front of the Byzantine walls, close to the shores of the Marmara Sea. Three or four centuries later, the third attack by the Ottoman Turks continued to reduce the size of the empire's territories, first in Anatolia and then in the Balkans, and finally destroyed the Byzantine Empire by occupying the main capital, Byzantium, with a systematic siege.
