Notes	In my article titled Ethnic Origin Issues of the Ottoman Empire (Belleten, No. 28, 1943), I gave information, to the extent of the limited documents available, about the Ay tribe, which I showed that, despite the contrary claims of Marquart and Z.V. Togan, had no relations with the Oghuz Kayis, and that the Turkish slaves belonging to this tribe lived in the 12th century. Revealing its presence in the palaces of Ijordscin and '11.4 Seljuks in the 11th century, I made the following observation at the time: "The fact that the poets of the Ghaznavids and Seljuks periods often mention the above-mentioned Turkish and Mongolian groups, but rarely mention the /ays, may indicate that the slaves belonging to this group were fewer than the others.
