Notes
The reestablishment of Ottoman rule in Syria and Lebanon and the removal of Bashir Shihab from the Druze emirate created a new situation. Although Bashir managed Jebel well during his 55-year reign and tried to eliminate the conflict between various elements, during the Egyptian administration, in accordance with the general policy followed by Ibrahim Pasha, he turned the old rivalry into a form of hostility with the measures he took against the Druze chiefs and Druze feudalism, such as exiling them and confiscating their properties.
