Before the capture of Istanbul, shortly after 's accession to the throne in Edirne with the consent of his father, Il II again took command of an important military attempt to remove the Ottomans from the Balkan peninsula. The Battle of Varna, which ended with the decisive defeat of Murad, dates back to the 15th century in terms of its causes and consequences. It is one of the most important events in the 19th century Ottoman-Turkish history as well as in the history of South-Eastern Europe.
