Notes	A mistake often made in Western Europe is to assume that the first time the Turks made an impact on European politics began in the 11th century. In fact, the Seljuk invasion of Syria and Anatolia at the end of the eleventh century created the western movement called the Crusaders. However, to say that the political influence of the Turks in Europe began with the Crusaders is to be unaware of the existence of the large Turkish community, of which the Seljuks belonged only to a branch called Uz.
