II. A magazine published during the reign of Abdulhamid and with a predominantly literary aspect.
Only seven issues were published between 20 Dhu al-Hijjah 1299-25 Jamāziyalawwal 1300 (2 November 1882-3 April 1883).
Muallim Nâci, Mehmed Şükrü, Tevfik Rızâ and Mehmed Nâdir are on the editorial staff of the magazine, which is privileged by A. Kâmil. In addition to these names, the magazine also includes poems and writings by Hersekli Arif Hikmet, Muallim Feyzi, known as Acem, Recâizâde Celâl, and Cretan Sırrı Pasha. In addition, poetry and prose translations, mostly from French writers such as Diderot, Fönelon, Herder and Lamartine, are also included. It is understood that Muallim Nâci played an important role in the publication of the magazine. Not only are his poems and prose published in every issue, but also his warnings and criticisms, which give the magazine its literary direction, attract attention. Tevfik Rıza translated aphorisms from Western philosophers and thinkers under the title "Cümel-i Hikemiyye", and Mehmed Şükrü translated aphorisms from Islamic and Eastern scholars. Mehmed Nâdir's articles on scientific subjects have been published.
In its first issue, Âfâk stated that its language would be "not eloquent, but simple, beautiful and scribal" and that its pages would be "open to those who love progress", and became one of the characteristic magazines seeking the synthesis of East-West culture in the years after the Tanzimat.
