Notes	Teachers Union Magazine was published by the Turkish Teachers Union Society between July 1925 and April 1927. One of the important non-governmental organizations seen in the Ottoman Empire after the declaration of the First Constitutional Monarchy was the societies founded by teachers. During this period, many teachers' societies were established under different names in different regions, especially in Istanbul. As Ankara turned into an important center during the War of Independence, the "Teachers and Teachers Association" was opened here in July 1920 under the leadership of Ankara High School teachers. Shortly after the opening of the association, the Union of Teachers and Teachers Associations of Turkey was established on May 7, 1921, in order to gather the teacher organizations operating scattered throughout the country under one roof, and the honorary presidency of the union was given to Mustafa Kemal. Newspapers reporting the establishment of the Union of Teachers and Teachers Associations of Türkiye wrote that the aim of the association was to protect the teaching profession and to contribute to the improvement of the social and economic status of teachers. The association, which will defend the rights of teachers before the government, also aims to help teachers who cannot work, get sick, get married and have children. Another important aim of the society is to organize various lessons, trips, talks and entertainments for the scientific development of teachers, and to open libraries, museums and reading halls. Newspapers and magazines will be published by the Society for these purposes. Although the Union of Teachers and Teachers Associations of Türkiye was supported by the government, it could not provide the expected organization throughout the country under the harsh conditions of the War of Independence. At its first congress held in 1924, the Society changed its name to the Turkish Teachers Association and decided to unite all teacher organizations operating throughout the country under one roof. The Teachers' Union Society primarily operated to defend the rights of teachers, to provide cooperation and solidarity among teachers, and engaged in various publishing activities, as well as public education, scientific and artistic activities. Teachers' Union Magazine was published between 1925 and 1927 as a product of the society's publishing activities. The establishment and publication of the magazine were helped by the important educators of the period, Abdüllatif Nevzat, Abdülfeyyaz Tevfik, Refet, Hamid Zübeyir, Hilmi Ziya, İzzet Ulvi, Ali Haydar, Harun El-Reşit, Rıfat Necdet, Faruk Nafiz, Nevzat Mahmut, Avnül Refik, Selim Sırrı, Muhib Nizam, İskeçeli Sıdkı, Refet. Avni, Mehmet Sıdkı, Muallim Seyfettin, Muallim Bilal, Mübarek Galip, Sabri Cemil, Hikmet Nurhan, Mehmet Emin, Abdullah Sabri, B. Atalay, Haydar Niyazi, Zeki Mesut, Doktor Reiti, Muallim Talât, İhsan, Ziya Emin, Sabri Cemil, Ziyaeddin Fahri, Hayri, Ali Sedat Zaim, Eyüp Mr. Hamdi, İsmail Habib, Osman, İbrahim Alaaddin and Tahsin Demiray took the lead. These names also formed the writing staff of the magazine. The magazine, which was published with the phrase "It is published once a month by the General Center of the Turkish Teachers Association in Ankara", has been published in 22 issues during its two-year publication life. The first issue was published in July 1925. Each issue, including the cover, is approximately 50 pages. 19-20, published in a single volume. Issues 11 and 12 are exceptions to this. The total number of printed pages of the magazine is 992. The price is 15 kuruş and the annual subscription is 200 kuruş including postage. This price changed a year later and each issue became 25 kuruş and the subscription fee became 300 kuruş. The place where the writing and administrative works of the journal are carried out is announced as the "department of private office" at the Ankara Teachers' Union General Center. The distribution places are the Istanbul and Anatolian Library in Karaoğlan Bazaar in Ankara, and the Teachers' Library opposite the Sublime Porte in Istanbul. The magazine was printed in Yeni Matbaa in Istanbul until the 10th issue, then one issue was printed in Yeni Ses and four issues were printed in Halk Printing House. Starting from the 16th issue, the magazine's printing place has been Ebuzziya Printing House in Istanbul. The responsible editor of the first seven issues of the Teachers' Union Magazine is Münif Kemal Bey. On page 321 of the 7th issue of the magazine, it was written that Münif Kemal Bey resigned from the directorship of the magazine due to the intensity of his work, and that the Second Chairman of the General Central Committee, Urfa Deputy Refet Bey, and the General Clerk, Afyon Deputy İzzet Ulvi Bey, will fulfill this duty. After this statement, İzzet Ulvi Bey appears as the responsible manager in the 8th and 9th issues. However, starting from the 10th issue, Münif Kemal Bey took over the management of the magazine again without any explanation and he fulfilled this duty until the last issue. In the first issue of the Teachers' Union Magazine, photographs of Mustafa Kemal with the introduction of "His Excellency the President of the Teachers' Union, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha" and of İsmet (İnönü) with the introduction of "His Excellency the President of the Teachers' Union, İsmet Pasha" were printed. The purpose of publishing the magazine is expressed in the following sentences in its first issue: "The Teachers' Union is expanding for the true and complete teachers' union. This is the first word of our magazine, which humbly introduces itself to its colleagues today. The Teachers' Union will always walk together with our teachers who try to enlighten every part of the great and beloved Turkey with the torches of the Republic and wisdom in their hands, and who open a real fight against ignorance, bigotry and hypocrisy, and their ideas and opinions." We have organized our program in order to fully follow and implement it, and we will be the first and only Teachers' Union in Turkey with the valuable writings of scholars, writers, writers, teachers and artists who have the guardianship of professional, scientific, intellectual, literary and educational trends. We have valuable helpers such as seriousness and perseverance to work on the strong promotion and dissemination of secondary education, the rights, benefits and promotion of the educational profession and its followers, to walk on this path and overcome all kinds of difficulties. We can assure our colleagues that our magazine starts its work with few words but many things. In the Teachers' Union Magazine, which started its publication life with this statement, articles containing many photographs of administrators, schools, activities carried out, students and teachers belonging to the Teachers' Union Society were published. News about association activities, legal regulations in the field of education and teachers were frequently included in the Teachers' Union Magazine. Articles on sociology, pedagogy and philosophy of education were written in the magazine, especially by Hilmi Ziya, Hamid Zübeyir, Nevzat Mahmut, Sabri Cemil, Zeki Mesut, Avnül Refik and Eyüp Hamdi. In these articles, it is seen that practical and pragmatic methods in education are highlighted in connection with the needs of the period. In addition, the national and social dimensions of education and the aspects shaping morality and decency were particularly emphasized. In this context, many articles have been published on the issue of compulsory education, history of education, new education and training methods applied in Europe, language education, architecture of educational institutions, discipline in schools, measurement and evaluation in education, textbooks, guidance and psychological counseling. Apart from these, the magazine also includes articles on culture, literature, poetry, folklore, music, librarianship, public education, travel and various scientific subjects. Teachers' Union Magazine closed with its last issue in April 1927, without any explanation, after two years of regular publication. All issues of the magazine, which has collections in different archives and libraries, can be accessed online from the Periodicals section of the National Library's website.
