Today, new universities in Turkey are established on the urban fringes or outside the city because of lack of space in the city or because the land is too expensive. In these campuses, which can be considered as urban-scale settlements in terms of their population and functional areas, investigating the relations between units and the usage value of the outdoor spaces surrounding these units is of much greater importance in non-urban campuses, which have become a sufficient living space on their own. This study, carried out in this context, includes thermal comfort, usage and space alignment analyzes to examine the outdoor physical conditions in a non-urban university campus. Three methods were followed in the study. The first method is to identify used/unused areas of the campus through behavioral mapping and to create user behavior maps in line with these findings. The second method is to investigate how comfortable the users are in the space they experience, which is another factor affecting the use value revealed by user behavior maps. The third method is to identify the situation related to the physical environment through space syntax analysis and to reveal the integrated and isolated areas of the campus. By superimposing the results of these three methods, the strengths and weaknesses of the campus design were determined, and suggestions were developed for improvements and evaluation of potential areas., The high young population rate in Turkey has led to the development of new universities at the periphery. In terms of facilities provided and population hosted, these campuses can be referred as micro urban settlements. Hence, it is critical to investigate the relationship between units and the spatial performance of outdoor spaces particularly in suburban campuses, since they do not only provide educational service but also living areas as well. Within this context, the study involves both outdoor thermal comfort, behavioral and space syntax analyzes in order to analyze outdoor physical conditions of a campus settled at the periphery of the city. There are three methods used in the study. First, used/under-used outdoor spaces in the campus were determined through users’ behavioral mapping in selected open spaces. Second, the degree to which “how comfortable users are in that place they experienced” has been investigated through questionnaires. Third, spatial configuration of outdoor spaces was evaluated through space syntax methodology to determine the integrated and segregated spaces within the campus. Overlapping the results of these methods opportunities are proposed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the campus design and to develop design strategies for potential improvements.
