The socio-spatial transformation of urban areas as an act of public intervention dates back to the 19th century, with programs to “clean up squalor neighborhoods” in industrial cities. This action became the urban policies of the 1960s and 1970s, with the attempts to transform dilapidated areas in city centers through "urban renewal". With the 1980s, a different approach began to dominate under the title of "urban revitalization", and urban transformation evolved from being an area of action focused solely on physical space to a more integrated approach that included social, economic and environmental problems.
