Princeton University Library

The College of New Jersey, today known as Princeton University, started its library with the personal collections of its first presidents and a significant donation from Governor Belcher in 1755. The collection, which was originally housed in Nassau Hall but was destroyed by fire in 1802, was reconstructed over time. During the reign of President James McCosh, there was a shift in librarianship philosophy towards accessibility and professional management; In this regard, the modern Chancellor Green Library, which offers daily access, was opened in 1875. In 1948, the Harvey S. Firestone Memorial Library was built to meet the growing collection need, offering an open shelving system and large study areas. Spreading across Firestone and other buildings, the Princeton library system, which has expanded over the years to more than 50 miles (about 80 km) of shelving, now hosts millions of printed works, microforms, manuscripts, and extensive digital resources.
