Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire - Lausanne
Lausanne Canton and University Library (Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire - BCU Lausanne) is one of the country's most important cultural institutions, with a hybrid structure located in the Vaud Canton of Switzerland and serving both the public and the academic environment. With its deep-rooted history dating back to the 16th century, the library has undertaken a dual mission: on the one hand, it collects and preserves the cultural memory, manuscripts and historical heritage (Patrimoine) of the region as the "legal deposit" center of the Canton of Vaud, and on the other hand, as the main research library of the University of Lausanne (UNIL), it supports academic education and scientific research on the university campus. The library system is spread across various locations, including the "Riponne" branch located in the historic Palais de Rumine in the city center and the "Unithèque" building, also known as the "Banane" (La Banane) for its iconic architecture, on the university campus (Dorigny). BCU, which manages the "Renouvaud" library network, has a strong digital vision, with pioneering projects such as the "Scriptorium", which digitizes Switzerland's historical newspapers and documents, as well as millions of printed volumes, and makes them available for open access.
