The Stanford University Libraries

Stanford University Libraries (SUL) is the library system of Stanford University in California, comprising more than 24 libraries, and many academic departments also have their own libraries. The main library in this system is the Green Library, which offers a variety of study and meeting spaces. Other notable libraries include the 24-hour Lathrop Library, which houses media resources for undergraduates, and the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, an archives and research center focusing largely on 20th-century historical documents. The library's history began in a single room in the inner quadrangle, and in 1900 it was moved to a separate building named after Thomas Welton Stanford. The construction of the new library, which started when this building was inadequate, was destroyed before it could be completed during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The actual large library building, which forms the core of the current Green Library, was completed in 1919. In 1980, a large annex building named after Cecil Howard Green was added to the library; The original part, which was repaired after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, was renamed the Bing Wing due to his donation.
