When the University of Melbourne was founded in 1853, the role of University Librarian was assumed by Mr John Frederic James, who also served as Registrar and University Secretary. For the University of Melbourne, information is considered a strategic asset and is at the heart of scientific communication, learning and teaching, research, institutional governance, working practices, effective use of resources and accountability. As an organizational structure, the University Library operates within "Academic Services" under the umbrella of "University Services". The library consists of two directorates: "Scholarly Information and Research" and "Collections"; Strategic leadership is provided by the "Director, Scientific Services (University Librarian)". The library also offers Employment and Professional Practice Programs.
