Abstract: Biographical dictionary of transmitters of traditions, being an abirdgment of the dictionary by al-Mizzī, Tahdhīb al-kamāl fī asmāʼ al-rijāl. At the end of the text, after the colophon, statement by Dhahabī indicating that al-Mizzī composed his work from Muḥarram 9, 705 to Dhū al-Ḥijjah 10 ("Yawm al-Aḍḥá), 712 [Aug. 1305-April 1313], and that Dhahabī completed his abridgment in Ṣafar 719 [1319], after eight months of work (vol. 3, fol. 315a-b). | Binding note: Vol. 2 and 3 are similarly bound with brown leather over paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers, fore-edge flap and envelope flap (the last two wanting in vol. 2). Both covers have a large elaborate border consisting of fillets and a large running pattern. The inner corners demarcated by fillets contain three impressions of a circular stamp with inscription in Arabic. Cental medallion of scalloped outline produced by three interlacing strapwork loops. The compartments defined by the loops are filled with gold dots and blind stamped rosettes. The envelope flap of vol. 3 apparently replacement, with an outer border consisting of fillets and small stamp with a floral motif on its point. Block-pressed leather doublure on vol. 2-3 (paper on fore-edge flap and envelope flap of vol. 3). Traces of a block-pressed leather doublure on vol. 1, fol. 1. Upper and lower covers of vol. 1 made of paper pasted over paper pasteboards with leather spine and edges. Paper pastedowns. Vol. 2 disbound. | Ms. codex. | more | less
