Sample Text
More than seven decades after Syria's experience with the French mandate, Syria is once again exposed to foreign interventions that are almost similar in many aspects to its first experience: there is the specter of division along regional, and even sectarian, lines. There are experiments with the “war economy” and others, and their resulting effects. All of this, Syria has already experienced. They say that history does not repeat itself. However, there are geographical “quasi-constants” in the ancient history of Syria, which keep recurring. The reader of this book will recognize some of them, or will discover them again by reviewing the economic management of Syria during the French Mandate.
