Forty-five years ago, Yemen emerged from a long period of conflict and isolation. In the cultural field, this renaissance was accompanied by an important archaeological component, which initially focused on ancient times, namely the South Arab civilization, and then quickly extended to the prehistoric and Islamic eras. This book traces more than forty years of French archaeological research, coordinated beginning in 1982 by the French Center for Yemeni Studies, which became the French Center for Antiquities and Social Sciences in Sana'a. Despite the brutal interruption due to recent conflicts, the discoveries made by numerous teams of archaeologists and historians make it possible to trace the great stages of the development of a legendary country, the country of the Queen of Sheba. This land witnessed the emergence of kingdoms and cities whose development was the result of advanced mastery of irrigated agriculture and an increase in caravan trade and then maritime trade for aromatic resins, horses and coffee. From the antiquity of its architecture, the refinement of its arts, and the charm of its carvings, South Arabian civilization (southern Arabia) appears very different from the false image of an Arabian desert roamed by lone Bedouins. In this cultural domain, this renaissance is the most important of an important archaeological volume, in the center of the antique era, the cell of the Sudanese civilisation, with rapid growth in prehistoric and Islamic periods.
