Notes
Barrio Malaga can be considered a novel depicting the birth of a popular neighborhood located in the western suburb of the city of Tetouan during the period of the Spanish protectorate over Morocco (1912-1956). The events begin in the 1950s, but go back to before that date, then extend to a few years after Moroccan independence (1956). Through this wide temporal and spatial space, the writer depicts the horror experienced by a group of boys from that neighborhood as a result of the dominance of some of the bullies and their intermediaries. He also depicts aspects of their meager living, their love affairs, their dreams, their readings, and their movie watching, and the surrounding description of the lives of the residents of the tin huts, their coexistence with the Spaniards coming from Andalusia, and the vendors who frequent their neighborhood, in addition to depicting some of their customs. Their stories, their songs, and their professions. However, portraying all of this was not without complications, tragedies, and dramatic complications that ensured the novel the appropriate amount of suspense.
