In the end, we see the hero of the novel squeezed among millions in the middle of Tahrir Square during the outbreak of the revolution, crying over his wounded hoopoe, or mourning for his beloved Nashwa, or surrendering to orders. His colleague Hanan, who loved him deeply and saved him from being killed.
