The Syrian person is almost dead until he embraces his replacement. From the diaries of the revolution, to the violence of the iron regime, to the violence of the military, and the prison cells, there are stages covered in blood, haunted by cruelty, and filled with the sounds of planes, cannons, and fire. A scene that seems like an absurd, extended nightmare, in which the Arab novel cannot escape from its tendencies to reveal the intensity of the ongoing conflict and its effects on the country and its people. This is what the epic “Escape to Death” tells us, the novel in which the writer, Hassan Bregash, kept up with the events of the Syrian revolution by examining the details of the Nakba that befell the capital of the Syrian revolution, Homs, and through the daily activity of the revolutionaries and the masses’ support for them by going out in mass demonstrations calling for freedom, independence, and the overthrow of the regime. From here, the local reality that the novel “Escape to Death” examines seems like a funeral scene, as all the elements of death are present, but whoever wants to search for life, all he has to do is search for it outside the borders of the country. Through this maze, the novel sheds light on the journey of a Syrian family’s escape from the city of Homs to Lebanon, then to Egypt, and finally Italy by sea. The winds blew, throwing the boat carrying seventy people into the sea. --
