Notes
This book includes a group of diverse critical studies, and what they all have in common is that they are studies in poetry, and that they follow the approach of careful critical reading, an approach that requires the critic not to issue any generalization without deeply analyzing the structure, language, and metaphorical images of the text, and without extracting from the text evidence that supports his vision. The reader will notice that the texts to which the studies are analyzed attempt to adhere to this approach, even though there is a clear focus on metaphorical images. The author tried as much as he could not to focus on form at the expense of content or vice versa. He prefers to treat the text at the point where the form meets the content, so that the content expresses itself through the form, and the separation between them is no longer possible except for the purposes of analysis. The book is divided into two sections: The first of them deals with some methodological issues, such as: the relationship of literature to thought and reality. The second section is various applied studies. There is a study on poetry and the problem of death, another on poets and time, a third on national anthems, and a fourth on Japanese haiku poems. The book also includes studies in Palestinian resistance poetry and in English and American romantic poetry.
