Notes Novelist Bashir Mufti, in his novel “The Room of Memories” - published by the Algerian “Difference Publications” and the Lebanese “Difaf Publications” - recalls a pivotal time period in Algeria’s contemporary history that followed the events of October 5, 1988, and reached its peak in the mid-nineties of the last century with the bloody crisis that the country experienced at that time. Although the novel begins in the year 2010, its hero, “Aziz Malik,” begins the narration from the moment of his birth before That date is fifty years ago in a popular neighborhood called Bash Jarrah (in Algiers). It soon returns to the real beginning shortly after the year 1988, when his awareness was formed in the last stages of his university studies and he dreamed of writing a novel for which he read hundreds of books on short stories and novels. But his hope was postponed for two decades, and the moment the text exploded for him did not occur until he received a letter from his old lover, Laila Morjane, in the year 2010. She had immigrated years before that to Canada, to return her message to him. A tape of his story, so memories crowd together and this complex text is a summary of those stories that were one of the manifestations of Algeria in a moment of fateful transformation that was going through difficult and bloody. --
