Notes
A closer examination of Ibn Qutaybah’s works reveals a distinct authorial practice in which the author adopts a special conception of the function and purposes of authorship. It is a perception governed by the intellectual and doctrinal system relied upon by the author. Ibn Qutaybah did not seem to distinguish between the personality of the writer and the personality of the jurist. He wanted to establish a rhetoric compatible with the Sunni approach in understanding the principles of the faith. The production of this rhetoric was in conflict with another opposing rhetoric, the rhetoric of the Mu’tazila, which was based on opposing intellectual and doctrinal principles. How was rhetoric employed to solve the problems of faith? What are the manifestations of this employment? -- Bibliography: p. 521-541
