Notes	The novel “Shouq Al-Darwish,” published by Dar Al-Ain in Cairo, by the Sudanese novelist Hammour Ziadeh, takes its events from a Sudanese historical era that has been covered by many foreign narrations and Sudanese stories that were divided between a narrator of its atrocities and a narrator of heroics that surpass all the heroics of Sudanese history. The Mahdist state was founded by Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi (1844-1885), and the period of its rule is considered one of the most documented eras in the history of Sudan. Foreign intelligence eyes also wrote about it a narrative history full of miraculous tales of horrors during the reign of Abdullah al-Taayshi, successor to the Mahdi. Examples of these include “The Sword and Fire” by Sultan Pasha, “Ten Years in the Caliph’s Prison” by Father Ohr Walder, and “Sudan in the Hands of Gordon.” Kitchener” by Ibrahim Fawzi Pasha. The novel, "Darwish's Longing," in its narrative imagination, was based on the interpretation of history with a discourse that tends to introduce the purposes of the writer-narrator and his view of that era intellectually and culturally, and to make connections with the characters of the novel with textual passages from the Holy Qur’an and ancient books and words with a Sufi significance that intersect with the intellectual vision of the Mahdist state. --
