Notes	In his novel “The Suitcase,” the Syrian novelist Dr. Issa Darwish writes the modern history of Syria according to his own artistic vision. He monitors the major transformations that occurred in a specific place and at a specific time, on the political, economic, and social levels. His vision revolves around the transformations of people in a time of political transformations to reveal their true identities. The novel covers the beginnings of the period of the coup that led to the fall of the separatist regime and the rise of unionists and nationalists to power, and extends until the outbreak of the war on Iraq in 2003. The novel is based on a narrator who tells us the events on the one hand, and on characters who dialogue with each other, to introduce us to their natures and their relationships with each other. The novelist does this by tracing the life of a Syrian doctor, who loves his profession, loves his family, and is loyal to his country. He rejected the temptations to work abroad, and preferred to remain in his homeland. However, the presence of a group of corrupt people in his life made his path deviated from his original goal, making him a victim of the intertwining of the interests of some corrupt men with greedy merchants, who seek illicit enrichment at the expense of the poor and working classes. --
