Notes
It is not easy to approach the “trilogy” of Algerian novelist Ahlam Mosteghanemi with an academic critical approach after the rumors and accusations that surrounded her, based on her first novel “Memory of a Body,” that the media promoted and almost blamed on her. Many are still circulating, for example, the accusation that made Nizar Qabbani the author of “Memory of the Flesh” or the other accusation that Saadi Youssef was the one who rewrote it... All these ambiguous rumors that were woven around the novel and its author were ignored by critic Mona Al-Sharafi Taim and put aside in her academic research “The Body in the Mirrors of Memory: Narrative Art in the Ahlam Mosteghanemi Trilogy” (Dafaf House - Beirut, Everything Library - Palestine, Dar Al-Aman - Rabat) and I devoted myself to reading the “trilogy” as texts in themselves, analysing, dissecting, and exploring all their dimensions, in order to clarify the truth and magnitude of this narrative experience, and evaluate it in the light of systematic criticism. Perhaps the results that I came out with are among the most important that can be produced by a study dealing with the most popular and widespread novel phenomenon, especially at the level of “intertextuality,” which the novelist sought to conceal or hide from the eyes of her readers. “Intertextuality” means, among other things, literary theft, as Arab criticism used to say in the past, in reference to what is implicit in the novelist’s repetition of his own production, sometimes even repetition. Critic Tayyem revealed that this intertextuality applies to the novels of the “trilogy” itself, and not only to the works of other novelists that Mosteghanemi relied on. -- Bibliography: p. 409-423 and index.
