This book proposes a study of the old regime forms of Ottoman municipal urban governance that were progressively built between the 15th and the 18th c. on the basis of various heritages (Byzantine, Medieval Islamic, Seljukid, Sassanid, medieval Ottoman) as well as an interpretation of the reforms of the Tanzimat era under the light of this re-evaluation of the previous system. This allows the author to propose innovative ideas on the very nature of civic life, social organization and modernity in the Islamic world. The research is based on original archives from Istanbul (BOA) and various cities of the Empire, from Aleppo to Tunis, Thessaloniki to Alexandria or Damascus and Cairo to Tripoli. This work is devoted to the study of the roots and characteristics of urban governance in the Ottoman Empire. It demonstrates how a municipal form of the ancien regime developed on the basis of different heritages (Byzantine, medieval Islamic, Seljuk, Sassanid and medieval Ottoman) from the 15th century onwards and studies its transformation during the reforms of the Tanzimat era in the 19th century. The author thus offers innovative interpretations regarding the civic dimension of urban life, social organization and the ambiguous impact with modernity in an Islamic context. The study draws on previously unpublished archives found in Istanbul (BOA) and in cities such as Aleppo, Tunis, Thessaloniki, Alexandria, Damascus, Cairo and Tripoli
