Notes
The first edition of this work began publication in 1684, when a volume in Italian entitled "L’esploratore turcs" and a French version entitled "L’espion du grand seigneur" were published at Paris by C. Barbin. Authorship is disputed, but it is generally agreed that the first fifty letters (the original four volumes) were written by Marana. Barbier, on the authority of La Monnoye, ascribes two volumes which appeared in 1696 under title, "Suite de L’espion turc," to C. Cotolendi. In the English editions, v. 1 contains the substance of the letters commonly ascribed to Marana; the continuation, said to have appeared first in English, has been assigned to various Englishmen, including Dr. Midgley and William Bradshaw, and has also been considered a translation from an Italian manuscript by Marana. cf. Barbier, Dict. des ouvrages anon. 1874, t. 2, col. 176-178; Dict. nat. biog., v. 6, p. 185, v. 37, p. 366-367; Gentleman’s magazine, 1840-41.
The first five volumes of the present edition correspond to the eight volumes of the English editions of 1741 and 1801. Text of the early letters differs from Paris text of 1st edition (cf. Gentleman’s magazine, March 1841, p. 267) and is apparently a retranslation from English. Vol. 6 contains "Mémoires ... depuis 1687 jusqu’à 1693."
On the authority of Manne, Quérard (Superch. litt. 1870, t. 2, col. 1046) gives Marana (J.-Jean-Paul) as the pseudonym of Jean Baptiste Primi Visconti, comte de Sainte-Majole. Manne’s statement (Nouv. recueil d’ouvrages anon. et pseudon. 1834, no. 580) is that Visconti is the "véritable" author of Les événemens les plus considérables du règne de Louis-le-Grand, écrits en italien par M. Marana ... (Paris, 1690)
