Oscar Wilde is mentioned together with the pioneers of modernist literature such as Baudelaire and Mallarmé. But he influenced the 20th century avant-garde not only with his literature, but also with his criticisms of art and literature. Moreover, his most prominent work is undoubtedly his life. He says that he has already added his genius to his life, and only puts his talent to his works. In his writings in this compilation, we follow Oscar Wilde's modernist thought of art and literature as well as his life that challenged his environment. In the first article of the book, "The Critic as an Artist", Wilde argues that interpreting a work of art should be considered a more creative activity than producing it and that the critic is the most competent artist. In "The Pen and the Poison" he argues that art and the artist are independent of all moral judgments, and in "The Discredit of Lies" he argues that art does not imitate nature and life, but that life and nature imitate art; According to him, the principle of loyalty to reality literally poisons art. In his last text in the book, “Socialism and the Human Spirit,” Wilde claims that humanity can be freed from two boring burdens disguised as virtues, such as altruism and philanthropy, thanks to socialism.
