In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, the truth of His praise, and may God’s prayers and peace be upon Muhammad and his family. It was narrated that Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan wrote to al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri, may God Almighty have mercy on him. Peace be upon you. I praise God to you, besides whom there is no god. As for what follows, we have heard from you a statement describing destiny, the like of which has not reached anyone in the past, and we do not know.
