We praise You, O One whose blessings are not encompassed by a number, and the multiplication of His portion does not end in time, and we send blessings upon Your Prophet, the one who guides and supports, and upon his family and companions who are guided to guidance and guidance. This is a treatise on arithmetic arranged in an introduction and ten chapters. Arithmetic: a science from which one can inquire about extracting numerical unknowns from specific information, and its subject: the number occurring in matter, as was said. Hence, arithmetic is counted from mathematics, and it contains words. Number was said: a quantity applied to the unit and what it consists of, so it is included. One, and it was said: half of the total of its entourage, so it comes out, and it may be taken to include it by including the entourage the fraction, and the truth is that it is not a number, even if it is composed of numbers, just as the individual substance when it is established is not a body, even if it is composed of bodies.... in extracting the unknowns by working in reverse, and it may be called analysis and inverse, which is working in the opposite of what the questioner gave, so if it is doubled, then it is halved, or it is increased, then it is decreased, or it is multiplied, then it is divided, or it is rooted, then it is quartered, or it is reversed, then it is reversed, starting from the end of the question. To produce the answer, if it was said: Any number multiplied by itself and added to the result by two and doubled and added to the result by three dirhams and divided the total returned by five and multiplied the outside by ten to obtain fifty so divide it...
