Notes We praise You, O One whose blessings are infinite in number, and whose multiplication does not end in time, and we send our blessings upon Your Prophet, the guide and supporter, and upon his family and companions, the guides who guide us to guidance and right path. As for what follows: This is a treatise on arithmetic, organized into an introduction and ten chapters. Introduction: Arithmetic is a science through which one can inquire about extracting numerical unknowns from specific information. Its subject is the number occurring in matter, as it was said. From there, arithmetic is counted from mathematics, and it contains words. Number was said: a quantity applied to the unit and what is composed of it, so the unit was included in it, and it was said: half the sum of its entourage. So the one comes out, and it may be necessary to include it in order to include the footnote. The fraction, and the truth is that it is not a number, even if numbers are composed of it, just as the individual substance, according to its confirmers, is not a body, even if bodies are composed of it. It is either absolute, then it is correct, or it is added to what is imposed as one, so it is fractional, and that one is its output. And the absolute, if it has one of the nine fractions or a root, then it is logical, otherwise it is deaf, and the logic, if its parts are equal, is complete.... The seventh is a radical if its root and a dirham are added to it, or its root and two dirhams are subtracted from it. The community or remainder was rooted. Know this, dear brother who seeks the precious things of demands, that I have mentioned to you in this brief letter, nay, the dear jewel, one of the precious things of the rules of accounting, which has not yet been collected in a letter or a book. So know its value, and do not make its dowry cheap, and withhold it from those who are not its owners, and do not give it to someone who is keen to be her husband, and do not give it to someone of a thick-tempered student, lest you be hanging pearls on their necks. Dogs, for many of their demands must be maintained and kept secret, and must be concealed from most of the people of the time, so keep my commandment to you, and God will protect you...
