I praise You, O God, O Possessor of height and power, and may I bless Muhammad, his family, and his companions with the best companions and family. And after: This is a letter containing a pressing matter from my knowledge of the direction of the qiblah. I dictated it in translation by seeking someone who does not agree with me to disagree with him, and I cannot help but help him and agree with him, along with more great benefits and beautiful returns. God is the Granter of faithfulness, He is my suffice, and He is the best disposer of affairs. It includes an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion. As for the introduction, in the terminology on which the following investigations depend, it is known that the earth as a whole is round, spherical in shape, and that the one standing on it from all sides has his head to the place next to the ocean, which is the top, and his feet to the place next to the center, which is the bottom....And he knows the East and the West and connects the two marks with a line that is the East and West line of Mecca. I have known that the place of intersection of the two lines of Mecca is Mecca, so a line emerges from the center of the circle that passes through the point of intersection of the two lines of Mecca to the ocean, which is the azimuth. Durkee's kiss is like this and the rest of the pictures are measured against it. The conclusion is in stating the length and breadth. There is no doubt that whoever wants to extract the azimuth of the Qibla in any spot needs to know its length and width, and that is something that not everyone undertakes on their own. So I quoted from the people’s tables a table containing the lengths and widths of well-known countries and well-known cities in order to measure the rest of the western regions from there to them. This will be made easy for whoever wants it, God willing...
