Notes
I thank God that He has guided us with His guidance to invent this art, and He has inspired us with His care to innovate it, so He made difficult for us easy and made sorrow easy, and I pray for the One who prescribed for us with His rulings the following of the evidence of the truth and the Sunnah, and for His family and companions who were blessed by their affiliation with Him and their companionship with Him with the perfection of Yemen and security. And then he says: Muhammad Al-Amin, known as Ibn Arslan, that the science of history is so high in status and so sublime in its origins, so many in its benefits, and so many in its purposes, that its origins are not known. It is built, and by it it is relied upon, and by it it is established, and from it it is derived, even though lying is the vehicle of news... so I invented principles for it that modify its pillars and establish its balance.... The description of the historian as he is the recorder of events, and his right is to be truthful, upright, religious, knowledgeable, and expert in the types of people and their morals, the basis of politics, the nature of construction, and the conditions of human society, devoid of purpose and psychological inclination, precise in sight, broad-minded, knowledgeable of the classes of narrators and historians, the methods of news, and the reasons for lying. The conditions for measurement, the sources of consensus, and its ruling include the possibility of error. This is the last thing that I have put together and collected from the objectives of this knowledge, and I think that I have fulfilled the intended purpose with the care of the worshiped King. The inventor of the art does not have to enumerate all of its issues, but rather he has to explain the subject of knowledge, and what he talks about in it, even if he does not diversify and branch out of it, and whoever comes after him must attach to it whatever he wants of achieving the meanings, multiplying the issues, and improving dictation...
