Notes
• Title supplied by cataloger from 4r., • Romanization supplied by cataloger., • 11 lines per page., • Bismillah, three first lines of the text and section headings are highlighted using golden ink., • Folios 3v, 4r and 4v contain scholia by Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Barmāwī (Ḥāshīyat al-Barmāwī ʿalá Sharḥ al-Ghāyat) and Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Bājūrī (Ḥāshīyat al-Bajūrī ʿalá Sharḥ ibn Qāsim al-Ghazzī). These scholia are written on margins in different directions explaining the text., • Incipit, folio 3v: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, said the Sheikh, Imam, and scholar, Shams al-Din Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Qasim al-Shafi’i, may God cover him with His mercy and satisfaction, Amen., • Explicit, folio 147r: This copy was completed by the poorest of the servants and the most needy of God Almighty, Hamzah Ibn Hamzah Al-Nawahi Al-Shafi’i is a school of thought that may God forgive him, his parents, those for whom forgiveness is prayed, and all Muslims. This book called “Taqrib” was completed at a time of distress? And it was said: At a time until dawn, on the fifth day in the month of Bishr, in the six crescents, in the thousandth year of the Hijra, prophecy, be the offices in the severity of ignorance with the badness of Surah (?) of right and wrong, and God knows best., • Based on the watermarks/countermarks of the papers, the text is transcribed post 1846, however, both texts have colophons crediting transcription to the scribe Ḥamzaj ibn Ḥamzah al-Nuwaihī [?]; listing completion of transcription of the manuscript in the early morning on Thursday, in year 1000 AH (1592). Most probably the scribe copied the text as well as the colophon from another copy. These copies have numerous scribal errors., • Binding note: Leather binding with tooling, one central stamp and four corner pieces, with a detached envelop flap. Inside the envelope flap, front and back covers have blue paper pasted downs with cream paper overlay. Sewing likely from a later repair; stab binding on four stations with a cream thread, stick core endbands. Dluwang patches applied over leather to strengthen binding at hinges have failed and broken. Previous masking tape repair to cover; Text block trimmed close with some loss of marginalia and catchwords. European-style laid paper in cream. Watermark visible (Dutch lion with a sword in a crowned medallio, inscribed 'concordia res parvae crescunt'. Countermark 'VDL'). Based on the watermark, the paper was made by the factory Jan, Claes and Aris van der Ley in Zaandijik, Netherlands sometime after 1846 (Hinzler 1986, p.7).
