| Sample Text | Plan du Partie de la Rade de Boston (Partial Map of Boston Harbor) is a pen-and-ink and watercolor manuscript map from 1778, the third year of the American Revolution. The map depicts Boston Harbor from Castle William Island to Point Alderton. The map shows the position of the French fleet under Admiral Count d'Estaing in Boston Harbor, where French ships headed for repairs after an inconclusive engagement off the coast of Rhode Island with the British fleet under Admiral John Byron. The map also highlights French artillery built on several islands offshore to protect the fleet, as well as a temporary hospital. A keyed caption identifies geographical points of interest and fortifications, as well as individual ships and their commanders. The map was originally accompanied by an excerpt from the memoirs of one of Admiral d'Estaing's officers. The relief is shown by histogram lines. The map contains a watermark. The scale is indicated in parallel, which is an old French unit of measurement equal to approximately 1.95 metres. The map is part of the Rochambeau Collection at the Library of Congress. |
