Sample Text Summary of Al-Miftah is an explanation of Miftah Al-Ulum, a work on Arabic rhetoric by Yusuf bin Abi Bakr Al-Sakaki (1160-1229). The author of the compendium is Jalal al-Din Muhammad al-Qazwini (1267 or 1268-1338), better known as the Khatib al-Qazwini and sometimes as the Khatib of Damascus. Al-Qazwini was a scholar well versed in grammar, rhetorical expression, and the principles of Islamic jurisprudence, and he was also a prolific writer. Takhlees Al-Miftah is a concise guide that contains examples of proper construction and corrupt construction. The work covers grammatical topics such as predicate and predicate adverbs, and stylistic issues such as brevity, redundancy, and equality. Little is known about the author of Miftah al-Ulum, other than that he was born in Central Asia, in present-day Uzbekistan.
