This 1781 pen-and-ink manuscript map shows the towns of Williamsburg, York, Hampton, and Portsmouth, Virginia, as well as the surrounding areas of southeastern Virginia. The area shown on the map extends from Cape Henry on the Atlantic Ocean to Williamsburg and south to Evroyable Marais, the French term for the area known as the Dismal Swamp. The map shows part of the Chesapeake Bay as well as the James and Elizabeth Rivers and the aqueducts of Hampton Roads. The map lists countries, roads, rivers, streams, bridges, mills, a salt store, as well as Kemps Wharf, the chapel of Bingo, and the names of some residents. The scale is in miles, and the map contains a watermark.
