| Sample Text | A handwritten note on the back of this pen-and-ink map, dating from about 1755, states: 'Map of the area around the Mississippi River. It was drawn by Shigiri (the Indian) who claims to have traveled throughout the region. 'It is not known who Shigiri was, but he appears to have drawn the map for an anonymous British official, at the beginning of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The map and accompanying notes depict the extent of French forces and troop concentrations in the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at the beginning of the war. |
