| Sample Text | Little is known about the author of the present work, Al-Husayn ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn Jahaf, other than what can be inferred from the brief dedication written at the beginning of the present manuscript. The dedication states that the work was compiled for the Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, who died during the first quarter of the eleventh century. Al-Yawaqit’s book on knowing the timings consists of 12 calendar tables, one for each month of the year, which are in turn divided according to the number of days in each month. Some confusion regarding the order of the months in the tables seems to have arisen at some point during the transmission of the manuscript, as the title page of each table gives two contradictory indications of the month in question. For example, the months January and October are mentioned in the title of the first table. This kind of contradiction continues throughout the manuscript. |
